In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with the gods, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not… That was the true Light, which lighteth everyone that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.” -John 1:1-5, 9-10
“For there is a God; and he hath created all things, both the heavens, and the earth, and all things that in them are—both things to act and things to be acted upon.” -2 Nephi 1:95-96 [2:14b-c]
Behold, I am he who was prepared from the foundation of the world to redeem my people. Behold, I am Jesus Christ. I am the Father and the Son. In me shall all mankind have life, and that eternally, even they who shall believe on my name; and they shall become my sons and my daughters.” -Ether 1:77-78 [3:14]
Lesson for Children
This lesson introduces children to the powerful truth that Jesus Christ, also called the Light of the World, is the very source of all life and creation. Using scriptures from the Book of Mormon and the Bible, children will learn that Jesus was with God in the beginning, that He made all things, and that His light shines in all people. Children will be invited to explore how they can recognize that light in their own lives and reflect it out into the world through kindness and love.
Activity
Materials: A flashlight or battery-powered candle, small paper hearts, crayons or markers
Instructions:
- Turn off the lights (or dim them) in the room. Ask: “How does it feel when it’s dark?”
- Turn on the flashlight or candle. Say: “This is like the Light of Christ—it helps us see and find our way!”
- Give each child a heart and invite them to draw or write one way they can show Christ’s light this week (helping, sharing, saying kind words, praying, etc.).
- Tape all the hearts to a poster that says “We Shine the Light of Christ!” and display it in the classroom.
Discussion Questions
- Who is the Light of the World?
- What do you think it means that everything was made by Jesus?
- Can you think of a time when someone’s kindness made your day better?
Activities and Reflection
Meditation
Have the children close their eyes. Read the following:
“Imagine you are outside at night, and it’s very quiet. You see stars above you and feel the wind on your face. Then you see a beautiful light start to shine—warm and soft. It fills your heart and makes you feel safe, happy, and loved. That light is Jesus. He is always with you. His light lives in your heart. Let it grow and shine.
“Take a deep breath in… and let it out.
“Now open your eyes—feel the peace of Jesus’ light with you.”
Additional Discussion Questions
- What did the light feel like in your heart?
- Where do you see the Light of Christ in the world?
- How can we help someone who feels sad or lost in darkness?
Suggestions for Action
- Smile and say something kind to someone at school.
- Help a parent or sibling without being asked.
- Draw a picture or write a note to cheer someone up.
- Pray each day and thank Jesus for His light.
- Look for ways to make someone feel loved and included.
Closing Thought and Activity
End by sharing this simple message, or your own thoughts on this lesson:
“Jesus is the Light that made the whole world. His light helps us see what is good and true. When we choose to love others, when we’re kind, and when we follow Jesus, we shine His light too. Even if the world doesn’t always see it, Jesus’ light can never be put out. It lives in YOU, and you can share it every day.”
